In 1965 Kingston Fashion students won the 6th Youth Fashion Design Contest organised by the Swiss Cotton Fabric and Embroidery Centre. The Evening News and Star wrote on Feb 23rd 1965: “Their 12 designs picked out from 700 submitted by the school’s dynamic young fashion head Daphne Brooker, left Basle, Hanover and Rome at the post, just pipped Vienna in the home straight and snatched the award from the Continental teams for the first time since the contest started six years ago.” Kingston’s win was indicative of the great strides the fashion department was taking under head Daphne Brooker, moving toward closer links with industry and increasing professionalization in outlook. The model in these images is Linda Lim, a KSA fashion student originally from Malaysia.
